Police in Hopatcong New Jersey arrested a 22-year-old man accused of having sexual relations with a girl under the age of 16.
According to police, the victim in the case was a minor. Since New Jersey law usually defines the age of consent as 16, the suspect was placed under arrest and charged with sexual assault.
A Hopatcong detective got numerous reports of the suspect engaging in illegal sexual relations with an underage victim. Police investigated the reports and conducted interviews with several people, including the suspect and the victim.
After conducting the interviews and investigating further, police placed the suspect under arrest. The suspect was charged with multiple sex crimes, including second degree sexual assault and second degree endangering the welfare of a child.
Hopatcong NJ police have not yet provided any additional information about the suspect or the case because the investigation is active and ongoing.
Although the exact age of the victim is unclear, authorities have confirmed that the victim was less than 16 years old at the time of the alleged illegal conduct.
Police have also not yet revealed any details about the “dating relationship” between the suspect and the victim due to concern for the victim’s privacy rights.
If the suspect is eventually convicted on the second degree sexual assault charges, he faces a potential sentence of 5–10 years in NJ State Prison.
After being arrested and processed, the suspect was taken to the Sussex County Jail in Newton, New Jersey. He is being held at the facility on a $140,000 bail amount, with no 10 percent cash option.
