Rockaway Township police arrested a local man accused of sexually assaulting a young boy at the Rockaway Townsquare Mall.
The sexual offense reportedly took place in a bathroom at the mall. The suspect allegedly approached the victim while he was using the restroom at the Rockaway NJ mall.
The victim later spoke with police and said that the suspect touched his intimate body parts.
The suspect has also been accused of trying to lure another small child at the mall’s Target store. The suspect allegedly threatened to cut the 5-year-old boy with a knife unless the child left with him.
Law enforcement is still trying to determine if the suspect knew either of the victims.
After both victims contacted authorities, police started an investigation. A number of agencies and departments assisted with the investigation, including the Rockaway Township Police Department, the Rockaway Borough Police Department, the Morris County Sheriff’s Office, the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, and New Jersey State Police.
At the conclusion of the investigation, police arrested the 34-year-old suspect. He was subsequently charged with several sex crimes, including sexual assault, luring, and endangering the welfare of a child. Additionally, the suspect was charged with attempted kidnapping, terroristic threats, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
After being placed under arrest and processed, the suspect was transported to the Morris County Jail on a $400,000 bail amount. Moreover, the suspect will have to avoid contact with the victims and any other children if he is able to secure his release on bail.
