A Morristown New Jersey man was convicted of sexually assaulting a minor in 2011.
The suspect had been accused of leading the gang rape of a 17-year-old female in a vehicle parked in Morristown, NJ. According to the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, the suspect and two of his friends sexually assaulted the victim while she was intoxicated on September 4, 2011. That night, the victim and her rapists were spending time together at the Lafayette Learning Center in Morristown, New Jersey.
The suspect eventually drove the victim home, but she passed out in the car because she was drunk. She later woke up to find the suspect having sex with her.
The suspect was 17 years old when he committed the rape, but he was charged as an adult for the sexual offense because a Morris County Superior Court judge waived him up from juvenile court to adult court.
The suspect was charged with aggravated sexual assault and sexual assault. At the end of his trial, the jury deliberated for less than an hour and returned a guilty verdict.
The other two suspects in the gang rape were also charged as adults. They previously pleaded guilty to charges of criminal sexual contact, which carries less severe penalties than sexual assault.
