Sussex County Sexual Assault ChargesA Glenwood NJ man was sentenced to nearly a decade in New Jersey State Prison after pleading guilty to endangering the welfare of a child.

The defendant had been accused of having sexual contact with a minor in early 2013. A Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office press release said that the defendant “engaged in sexual conduct which would impair or debauch the morals of a child, the child being less than 13 years old.”

If the defendant had declined to accept the plea offer, he could have faced very serious charges of aggravated sexual assault because the victim in this case was less than 13 years old and he was more than 4 years older than her. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:14-2(a), aggravated sexual assault is classified as a first degree felony. First degree crimes carry a potential sentence of 10–20 years in NJ State Prison.

Prior to trial, the prosecution and the defendant reached a plea agreement on the lesser charge of endangering the welfare of a child. Although the plea deal was reached in April, a sentence was not handed down until September

At the sentencing hearing in Sussex County Superior Court in Newton NJ, a superior court judge sentenced the defendant to 9 years in NJ State Prison.
