Sometime around 8:00 p.m., Franklin NJ police got a call about a “road rage” incident on Route 23 in Franklin, New Jersey. The individual who called police to report the incident also indicated that the driver was in possession of a gun.
Police officers arrived at the scene and conducted an investigation. According to law enforcement, the 57-year-old suspect flashed a firearm “in the direction of but not at the driver of another vehicle.” The incident reportedly occurred while the suspect pulled his vehicle into a Quick Chek gas station in Franklin, NJ.
Police have not yet revealed the reason for the suspect allegedly pulling a handgun on the other driver. However, a Franklin police news release stated that the suspect brandished the gun because he wanted to intimidate the other driver.
Shortly after police found the suspect, they placed him under arrest. The suspect was subsequently charged with unlawful possession of a weapon.
If the suspect is eventually convicted of illegal handgun possession, he would be subject to severe penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5, anyone who possesses a handgun without first having obtained a carry permit can be charged with a second degree criminal offense. A conviction on second degree unlawful possession of a weapon charges could lead to a sentence of 5-10 years in New Jersey State Prison.
After being arrested and charged, the suspect was transported to the Sussex County Jail. He was being held at the facility on a $10,000 bail amount.
